البيان والتبيين أو البيان والتبيُّن هو كتاب من أعظم مؤلفات الجاحظ، وهو يلي كتاب الحيوان من حيث الحجم ويربو على سائر كتبه. وإذا كان كتاب الحيوان يعالج موضوعاً علمياً فإن كتاب البيان والتبيين ينصب على معالجة موضوع أدبي. ولكن الجاحظ في هذين الكتابين، شأنه في جميع كتبه، ينحو منحى فلسفياً. فهو لا يقتصر في كتاب الحيوان على أخبار الحيوانات وخصالها وطباعها، بل يتطرق إلى موضوعات فلسفية كالكمون والتولد، والجواهر والأعراض، والجزء الذي لا يتجزأ، والمجوسية والدهرية الخ. وفي كتاب البيان والتبيين لا يكتفي بعرض منتخبات أدبية من خطب ورسائل وأحاديث وأشعار، بل يحاول وضع أسس علم البيان وفلسفة اللغة. …

Translation

Al-Bayan wal-Tabyen or Al-Bayan wal-Tabyen is one of Al-Jahiz’s greatest works, and it follows the book Al-Hay’a in terms of size and is superior to all of his other books. If the book “Animal” deals with a scientific topic, then the book “Al-Bayan wal-Tabyin” focuses on treating a literary topic. But Al-Jahiz in these two books, like in all his books, takes a philosophical approach. In the Book of Animals, he does not limit himself to news about animals, their characteristics, and their nature, but rather touches on philosophical topics such as latency and generation, essences and symptoms, the indivisible part, magicianism, eternity, etc. In the book Al-Bayan wa Al-Tabin, he does not content himself with presenting literary selections, including sermons, letters, hadiths, and poems, but rather attempts to lay the foundations of the science of rhetoric and the philosophy of language. …
