كتاب الحيوان هو أول كتاب جامع كُتب باللغة العربية في علم الحيوان. تحدث فيه كاتبه الجاحظ عن العرب وأحوالهم وعاداتهم ومزاعمهم وعلومهم، وبعض مسائل الفقه والدين والصفوة المختارة من الشعر العربي والأمثال والبيان ونقد الكلام. كان جميع مَن كتبوا قبل الجاحظ في هذا المجال، أمثال الأصمعي وأبي عبيدة وابن الكلبي وابن الأعرابي والسجستاني، يتناولون حيوانًا واحدًا، وكان اهتمامهم لغويًا وليس علميًا، ولكن الجاحظ اهتم إلى جانب اللغة والشعر بالبحث في طبائع الحيوان وغرائزه وأحواله وعاداته. …

Book of Animals is the first comprehensive book written in Arabic on zoology. In it, his writer Al-Jahiz spoke about the Arabs, their conditions, customs, claims, and sciences, and some issues of jurisprudence and religion, the selected elite of Arab poetry, proverbs, rhetoric, and the criticism of speech. All those who wrote before Al-Jahiz in this field, such as Al-Asma’i, Abu Ubaidah, Ibn Al-Kalbi, Ibn Al-Arabi, and Al-Sijistani, dealt with one animal, and their interest was linguistic and not scientific, but Al-Jahiz was interested, in addition to language and poetry, in researching the nature of animals, their instincts, conditions, and habits. …
