المحاسن والأضداد كتاب أدبي صنّفه الأديب أبوعثمان الجاحظ وصاغه بأسلوب رصين يتحدث فيه عن محاسن الأشياء ومساوئها، بمختلف أشكالها مِن عادات وأفعال وسجايا وحقائق وأمور على الضدَين الحسنُ والسيئ. وقد استفتحه بالتذمر من حُسّاده الأدباء والعلماء الذين يعددون مثالب كُتبه، فإن هوَ نحلها لغيره من الكُتّاب الأولين كـابن المقفع وَالخليل فإنهم يُثنون عليها ويتدارسونها إعجاباً لما فيها، فيقول:

Advantages and Opposites is a literary book compiled by the writer Abu Othman Al-Jahiz and formulated in a sober style in which he talks about the advantages and disadvantages of things, in their various forms, including habits, actions, characteristics, facts, and matters that are the opposites of good and bad. He opened it by complaining about his envious writers and scholars who enumerated the shortcomings of his books. If he attributed them to other early writers, such as Ibn al-Muqaffa and al-Khalil, they praised them and studied them in admiration for what was in them, so he says:
