About this work

المُسْتَقْصَى فِي أَمْثَالِ العَرَبِ هو من مشاهير كتب الأمثال، إلا أنه لا يرقى إلى كتاب معاصره الميداني (مجمع الأمثال). والمشهور أن الزمخشري لما تأمل كتاب الميداني ندم على أنه ألف كتاباً جامعاً في الأمثال، فقد ظن أنه حشد فيه وجمع ما لم يتهيأ لغيره، وباهى بأن سماه (المستقصى) ثم تبين له أنه أقل فائدة وأهون جمعاً من كتاب الميداني. شرع الزمخشري في تأليف المستقصى بعد رجوعه من مكة وأتمه في سنة 499هـ.

Translation

Al-Muqtassa fi Proverbs of the Arabs is one of the most famous proverbs books, but it does not reach the level of the book of his field contemporary (The Collection of Proverbs). It is well known that when Al-Zamakhshari contemplated Al-Maidani’s book, he regretted that he had written a comprehensive book on proverbs. He thought that he had collected in it what he had not prepared for anything else, and he boasted by calling it (Al-Mustaqasa), but then it became clear to him that it was less useful and easier to collect than Al-Maidani’s book. Al-Zamakhshari began writing Al-Mustaqsa after his return from Mecca and completed it in the year 499 AH.
