About this work
كتاب «حياة الحيوان الكبرى» هو أشهر مؤلفات كمال الدين الدميري. وهي نسختان: صغرى: وكبرى، والمطبوعة هي الكبرى، وتمتاز عن الصغرى بإضافة المواد التاريخية وتفسير المنامات التي تقع فيها تلك الحيوانات. وتضم (1069) مادة مرتبة على حروف المعجم، إلا أن هذا الرقم لا يعني عدد الحيوانات التي ترجم لها، إذ أن كثيراً من هذه المواد في حكم المترادف، فهو يترجم لكثير من الحيوانات في مواطن شتى، حسب تعدد أسمائها، أو اختصاص أولادها وإناثها بأسماء أخرى، وتتفاوت هذه التراجم في توضيحاتها، فبعضها يصل إلى (11) صفحة، كالأسد، وبعضها: بضع كلمات. وتحتل الطيور والثدييات منزلة ممتازة في الكتاب. …
Translation
The book “The Great Life of the Animal” is Kamal al-Din al-Damiri’s most famous book. There are two versions: minor and major. The printed version is the major one, and is distinguished from the smaller one by adding historical materials and interpreting the dreams in which these animals occur. It includes (1069) articles arranged according to the letters of the dictionary, but this number does not mean the number of animals for which it was translated, as many of these articles are synonymous, as it is translated for many animals in various places, according to the multiplicity of their names, or the specialty of their children and females with other names, and these translations vary in their explanations, as some of them reach (11) pages, such as the lion, and some: a few words. Birds and mammals occupy an excellent place in the book. …
