Episode 6: Successor on Earth and a Devoted Worshipper

The summit of Dawud's story is the trust Allah placed on him as a just ruler. Allah said, "O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth and do not follow [your own] desire, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allah…" (Qur'an 38:26). This verse affirms that power is a trust for establishing justice, not a tool to serve desire. Dawud fulfilled that trust, and his knowledge was later inherited by his son. Allah said, "And We had certainly given to David and Solomon knowledge… And Solomon inherited David…" (Qur'an 27:15-16). Behind his rank as king and prophet, Dawud was a diligent worshipper. Allah called him "awwab" — one who constantly turns back to Him (Qur'an 38:17). His devotion became a timeless model, so that his fasting and night prayer were made the measure of the worship most beloved to Allah. Reflection: Dawud combined the justice of a ruler with the humility of a servant. He was strong yet always returning to Allah, powerful yet still worshipping — a model of a ruler undistracted by his own power. Source & Note: evidence from the Qur'an — 38:26, 38:17; 27:15-16. The excellence of Dawud's worship is stated in an authentic hadith reported by al-Bukhari & Muslim: "The most beloved fasting to Allah is the fasting of Dawud; he fasted a day and broke a day. And the most beloved prayer to Allah is the prayer of Dawud; he slept half the night, prayed a third of it, and slept a sixth of it" (Bukhari no. 1131 & Muslim no. 1159).
