Episode 5: The Debate Against the King Who Claimed Lordship

Have you not considered the one who argued with Ibrahim about his Lord because Allah had given him kingship? When Ibrahim said, "My Lord is the One who gives life and death," the king answered arrogantly, "I too give life and death" (2:258). He imagined he could prove his claim by sparing one prisoner and killing another โ a mere trick of words. So Ibrahim did not prolong the argument on that wordplay. He at once brought a proof impossible to counter: "Indeed, Allah brings the sun from the east, so bring it from the west" (2:258). So the disbeliever was silenced; and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people (2:258). The king's argument collapsed instantly, for he had no power at all over the laws of nature that Allah has decreed. Reflection: truth needs few words to defeat arrogance. One clear, irrefutable proof is stronger than a thousand debates that go in circles.
