Allah answered that prayer with news beyond hope: "O Zakariya, indeed We give you glad tidings of a boy whose name will be Yahya (John); We have not made before him anyone of that name" (19:7). Even his name was a gift given directly by Allah. In wonder mixed with faith, Zakariya asked, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?" (19:8). Allah answered, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing at all'" (19:9). Zakariya then asked for a sign. So Allah made his sign this: that he would not be able to speak to people for three nights, though sound in body (19:10). He came out to his people from the prayer chamber and gestured to them to glorify Allah in the morning and the evening (19:11). Reflection: for Allah nothing is impossible. Old age and barrenness are no barrier to His will. What He asks of His servant is only certainty and gratitude.
