Episode 6: The Infant Who Spoke in the Cradle

Then Maryam brought the child to her people, carrying him. They said, in accusation, "O Maryam, you have certainly done a monstrous thing. O sister of Harun, your father was not an evil man, nor was your mother unchaste" (19:27-28). Maryam answered not with words but by pointing to her child. They said, "How can we speak to one who is a child in the cradle?" (19:29). Then, by Allah's leave, the infant spoke: "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture (the Injil) and made me a prophet" (19:30). "And He has made me blessed wherever I am, and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I live; and [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me arrogant or wretched. And peace is upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive" (19:31-33). Reflection: the finest defense of Maryam's honor came not from argument but from Allah's own miracle. And the first words of Prophet Isa affirmed that he is the servant of Allah โ a foundation that sets right every later misunderstanding about him.
