Episode 7: Victory and the Perfection of the Religion

After years of struggle and many events, the victory Allah had promised arrived. The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, which at first seemed a weakness, Allah called "a clear conquest." Allah said, "Indeed, We have given you a clear conquest, that Allah may forgive for you what preceded of your sin and what will follow and complete His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path, and [that] Allah may aid you with a mighty victory" (Qur'an 48:1-3). Some time later, Makkah was conquered without significant bloodshed. The Prophet ๏ทบ entered his birthplace in humility and pardoned those who had once opposed him, cleansing the Ka'bah of idols. Islam then spread widely. At the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajj al-Wada'), the verse marking the perfection of the religion descended: "โฆThis day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religionโฆ" (Qur'an 5:3). Reflection: true victory comes from patience, not haste; and the summit of a victor's honor is to forgive. With the perfection of this religion, there is nothing left to add or subtract โ the Qur'an and the Sunnah suffice as the anchor.
