Arrogance finally won out over the warning. The wrongdoers among Thamud hamstrung and slaughtered the she-camel, challenging the promised punishment. Allah said, "So they hamstrung the she-camel and were insolent toward the command of their Lord and said, 'O Salih, bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the messengers'" (Qur'an 7:77). The deed was not done by the whole people, but led by the most wretched among them. Allah said, "But they called their companion, and he dared and hamstrung [her]" (54:29). And in Surah Ash-Shams, "When the most wretched of them was sent forth" (91:12). Facing that defiance, Salih gave them a term as a final chance, "But they hamstrung her, so he said, 'Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied'" (11:65). Reflection: a single sin led by a few can destroy an entire people when the rest approve or allow it. To defy Allah's command with arrogance is a doorway to ruin โ and that three-day term was the final mercy they squandered.
