The heart of the reform Syu'aib brought touched the lifeblood of his people: honest trade. Allah continued, "โฆSo give full measure and weight and do not deprive people of their due, and cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. That is better for you, if you are believers" (Qur'an 7:85). The people of Madyan were used to shorting the scale when selling and demanding extra when buying โ stealing bit by bit from what belonged to others. Syu'aib made clear that even the smallest cheating is "depriving people of their due" and spreading corruption on an earth Allah had set in good order. In Surah Hud he added a warning and a hope together: "โฆIndeed, I see you in prosperity, but I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day. And O my people, give full measure and weight in justice and do not deprive the people of their due and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption" (Qur'an 11:84-85). Reflection: faith is not merely ritual in a place of worship, but also honesty in the market and on the scale. True religion guards the rights of others down to the smallest gram; shorting people of their due is a corruption that invites punishment.
