Basra's Famous Zuhud Scholar & Orator
Al-Hasan Al-Basri was born in Medina and grew up close to the wives of the Prophet ๏ทบ before his family moved to Basra, where he would later become the city's most influential cleric. He is famous for his heart-touching advice about asceticism, the afterlife, and self-reflection, delivered with linguistic fluency that makes his assembly always packed with listeners from various circles. Many subsequent generations of Sufism scholars made their teachings the main reference in developing morals and spirituality.
1Imam Tabi'in and Expert of Advice
Al-Hasan bin Abil Hasan Al-Bashri (21โ110 H), the great tabi'in who grew up in Medina and settled in Basrah. His mother was the servant of Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ๏ทบ. He learned from many friends and became a priest of knowledge, asceticism, and heart-shaking advice.

2Zuhud and His Words of Wisdom
Al-Hasan's advice about the transience of the world and the seriousness of doing good deeds for the afterlife will be remembered throughout the ages. He said, "O son of Adam, you are but a collection of days; every time a day goes away, a part of you goes too."

3Dare to Advise the Authorities
Al-Hasan dared to convey the truth to the tyrannical rulers of his time, rebuking tyranny with wisdom without fear. He died in Basrah in 110 AH, leaving behind an example of a scholar who united knowledge, charity and courage.
