Hujjatul Islam, Writer Ihya Ulumuddin (d. 505 H)
Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali was called "Hujjatul Islam" (proof of the truth of Islam) because of the depth of his knowledge which included fiqh, philosophy, Sufism and kalam science at the same time. After experiencing a spiritual crisis at the peak of his glory as a teacher in Baghdad, he left all worldly positions to follow the path of Sufism, and from this journey his monumental work, Ihya Ulumuddin was born - an Islamic spiritual encyclopedia that combines outer jurisprudence with inner purification. His book, Bidayatul Hidayah, is one of the basic moral books most widely taught in Islamic boarding schools in the archipelago.
1Hujjatul Islam
Abu Hamid Muhammad Al-Ghazali (450โ505 H) was born in Thus, Persia, became an encyclopedic scholar in fiqh, ushul, mantiq, philosophy and Sufism. His intelligence led him to become a professor at the Baghdad Nizhamiyah Madrasah at a young age, and was nicknamed Hujjatul Islam.

2Soul Searching and Turning Point
At the peak of his fame, Al-Ghazali experienced an inner crisis, left his post, and spent years in seclusion in search of peace of mind and sincerity. From this spiritual journey, the renewal of Sufism which was based on sharia was born.

His great work, Ihya Ulumuddin, combines external jurisprudence and internal Sufism - bringing religious knowledge to life by emphasizing sincerity, purification of the heart and morals. This book is one of the most influential works in Islamic history.

4His Legacy and Death
Al-Ghazali returned to teaching at the end of his life, defending the Ahlussunnah creed from philosophical deviations through Tahafut al-Falasifah, then died in Thus in 505 AH. The influence of his thinking is felt to this day throughout the Islamic world.
