Tracing the stories of the archipelago's scholars, from Hamzah Fansuri in Aceh to Buya Hamka in the modern age, we find one common thread: they all made knowledge a path of service, and their legacy lives on far beyond their lifetimes. That legacy is tangible. There are books still read and taught in pesantren to this day. There are great institutions — Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, thousands of pesantren, schools, hospitals, and universities — born from their ideas. There is an unbroken tradition of learning and sanad, connecting today's students with the scholars of old, on and on back to the Messenger of God. No less important, they left an example of character: uniting depth of knowledge with social concern, firmness of principle with gentleness of conduct, and love of religion with love of country.
