رسالة إلى أهل الثغر هي رسالة كتبها أبو الحسن الأشعري بأجوبة موجهة إلى أهل الثغر بباب الأبواب (مدينة تقع على بحر طبرستان) فيما سألوه عنه من مذهب أهل الحق في أصول الدين، وما كان عليه سلف الأمة، وقد قرن الأشعري ذكر الأصول بـ «أطراف الحجاج»، دليلا على صوابها، وبيانا لخطأ من فارق الحق فأوغل في البدع، ثم عقد لذلك باباً ذكر فيه ما أجمع عليه أهل السلف من أصول الدين التي نبهوا بالأدلة عليها، وقد ذكر واحداً وخمسين إجماعاً. …

Translation

A message to the people of the Thaghr is a letter written by Abu al-Hasan al-Ash’ari with answers addressed to the people of the Thaghr in Bab al-Awab (a city located on the Tabaristan Sea) regarding what they asked him about regarding the doctrine of the people of truth regarding the fundamentals of religion, and what the ancestors of the nation were upon. Al-Ash’ari linked the mention of the fundamentals to “the limbs of the pilgrims,” as proof of their correctness, and an explanation of the error of those who departed from the truth and delved into heresies. Then he created a chapter for that in which he mentioned what the people of the predecessors had unanimously agreed upon regarding the foundations of religion that they were alerted to with evidence, and he mentioned Fifty-one consensus. …
