Translation

This book, “Al-Zahir fi Meanings of People’s Words” by the scholar Ibn al-Anbari, deals with the interpretation of the meanings of expressions and words common among people in the areas of daily life and worship. The author focuses on clarifying the goals of praises, supplications, and remembrances used in prayer and other Islamic acts of worship, while explaining the meanings of sentences and words used among people in various situations. The book is concerned with studying the Arabic language and its sciences, and provides linguistic and jurisprudential explanations for a group of phrases and words used in the religious and worldly life of Muslims.

God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs
Among that is the man’s saying to the man: “May God protect you.”
And they say, “And He is the best disposer of affairs.”
And they say: There is no power and strength except in God
And they say, “O God, remove our sins from us.”
They say: O God, forgive us our sins
And their saying, “The muezzin has given the call to prayer,” means “I have heard the call to prayer.”
And they say, “God is great, God is great.”
And they say, “I bear witness that there is no god but God.”
And they say, “I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God.”
And they say live to prayer
And they say, “Live to the farmer.”
They say that the man has performed ablution for prayer, or he has begun to perform ablution for prayer
They say that the man has performed tayammum
And they said, “The man has cleansed himself.”
And they said, “The man has been cleansed.”
And they said, “The man prayed.”
And they say the man has fasted
And they said, “The man kneeled.”
And they said, “The man prostrated.”
And they say the man has become scattered
And they say, “The man’s clothing.”
And their saying at the beginning of the prayer: Glory be to You, O God, and with Your praise
And they say, Blessed be your name and exalted be your grandfather
