About this work

Translation

Al-Gharib Al-Musannaf or Musannaf Al-Gharib is a topical dictionary written by Abu Ubaid Al-Qasim bin Salam, in which he lists everything related to the names and descriptions of things and creatures according to subject and meaning, as Abu Ubaid was keen to classify linguistic vocabulary into objective semantic fields, and it is considered the oldest known Arabic topical dictionary. The book was appreciated by ancient linguists to the extent that they wrote explanations and criticisms of it, such as the books “Explanation of the Gharib al-Musannaf” by Ibn Sayyidah al-Andalusi and “The Response to the Gharib al-Musannaf” by Abu Naim al-Isfahani.
