The book Al-Jumhara on Language was written by Abu Bakr bin Duraid, who died in the year 321 AH, who was the chief linguist of his time, and whose students included Abu Ali Al-Qali, Ibn Khalawayh, and Abu Faraj Al-Isfahani. Al-Azhari mentioned that he only mentioned words in his dictionary that were correct to hear, so he called it Tahdheeb al-Lughah. Ibn Duraid said in the introduction to his book, explaining the reason for calling it Al-Jumahrah, “And we lent it this name because we chose for it the common ones from the speech of the Arabs and we deferred to it the brutal and the objectionable.” Ibn Duraid mentioned in his dictionary the common pronunciation and not the strange, rare one, as Ibn Duraid devoted separate sections to the rare expressions at the end of the Al-Jumahrah, as his purpose was very similar.
