معجم العين هو أول معجم منسق للغة العربية، قام بكتابته الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي وأتمه ورتبه الليث بن المظفر الليثي الكناني ويعتمد في ترتيبه على مخارج الحروف من أعمق نقطة في الحلق مرورا بحركات اللسان وحتى أطراف الشفتين، وبذلك يكون أول حروفه هو العين وأخرها هو الميم، ثم تتبعهم حروف العلة الجوفية (و، ي، أ).

Translation

The Al-Ain dictionary is the first coordinated dictionary of the Arabic language. It was written by Al-Khalil bin Ahmed Al-Farahidi and completed and arranged by Al-Layth bin Al-Muzaffar Al-Laithi Al-Kinani. Its arrangement depends on the origins of the letters from the deepest point in the throat, through the movements of the tongue, to the tips of the lips. Thus, its first letter is Al-Ain and its last is the meem, then they are followed by the subterranean vowels (w, y, a).
