أُسْد الغابة في معرفة الصحابة ويعرف اختصارا بأُسْد الغابة هو كتاب ألفه ابن الأثير حاول فيه استقصاء جميع الصحابة (أي من صحبوا النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم) وتراجمهم، ويذكر المؤلف في مقدمة الكتاب عزمه استيعاب أربعة أعمال أساسية من كتب «الصحابة» التي أُلّفت قبله، وهي أعمال أبو عبد الله بن منده وأبو نعيم أحمد بن عبد الله (ووصفهما بالحافظين) وأبو عمر بن عبد البر القرطبي (وصفه بالإمام)، وأبو موسى محمد بن أبي بكر بن أبي عيسى الأصفهاني مكملاً على عمل ابن منده بالإضافة إلى آخرين يذكر منهم أبو علي الغساني. …

Translation

The Lion of the Jungle in Knowledge of the Companions, known as the Lion of the Jungle for short, is a book written by Ibn al-Atheer in which he attempted to survey all the Companions (i.e. those who accompanied the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace) and their biographies. The author states in the introduction to the book his intention to comprehend four basic works from the books of the “Companions” that were written before him, which are the works of Abu Abdullah bin Mandah, Abu Nu’aym Ahmad bin Abdullah (he described them as memorizers), and Abu Omar bin Abdul-Barr al-Qurtubi. (He described him as the Imam), and Abu Musa Muhammad bin Abi Bakr bin Abi Issa Al-Isfahani complemented the work of Ibn Mandah, in addition to others, including Abu Ali Al-Ghassani. …
