كتاب الطبقات الكبير لمحمد بن سعد بن منيع البصري الزهري المشهور بابن سعد، من أهم الكتب التي ألفت في الطبقات وتراجم الرجال، ولم يسبقه في هذا الموضوع إلا «كتاب الطبقات» لشيخه الواقدي، غير أن كتاب الواقدي لم يصل إلينا، ويُقال إن ابن سعد أفاد منه كثيراً. يعد كتاب الطبقات الكبير مرجعًا في السيرة النبوية والتراجم والتواريخ، حيث تناول فيه مصنفه السيرة النبوية المطهرة، عارضًا لمن كان يفتي بالمدينة المنورة، ولجمع القرآن الكريم، ثم قدم تراجم للصحابة ومَن بعدهم من التابعين وبعض الفقهاء والعلماء. …

The Great Book of Classes by Muhammad bin Saad bin Mani’ al-Basri al-Zuhri, known as Ibn Saad, is one of the most important books written on classes and biographies of men. It was only preceded in this subject by “The Book of Classes” by his sheikh al-Waqidi. However, al-Waqidi’s book has not reached us, and it is said that Ibn Saad benefited greatly from it. The Great Book of Classes is considered a reference on the Prophet’s biography, biographies, and histories. In it, his work dealt with the purified Prophet’s biography, presenting those who issued fatwas in Medina, and compiling the Holy Qur’an. Then he presented biographies of the Companions and those who came after them among the followers and some jurists and scholars. …
