الوافي بالوَفَيَات أضخم مؤلفات الصَّفَدي، وأوفى الكتب المؤلفة في الإسلام في تراجم الرجال، وضعه الصفدي في ثلاثين مجلدة، وهو يأتي في المرتبة الثانية من ناحية الحجم بعد كتابه: التذكرة الصفدية أو التذكرة الصلاحية، الذي ما يزال مخطوطًا وهو كتابٌ كبيرٌ في التاريخ واللغة والأدب، وقد أشار الصَّفدي في أعيان العصر وأعوان النصر إلى المجلد السادس والأربعين منه، وأحال عليه. وقد جاءت تراجم الكتاب ممتدة زمانيًا، إذ تبدأ بما قبل الإسلام، وتنتهي ببعض من عاش في القرن الثامن الهجري، أي من الذين عاصرهم الصفدي، كما استوعبت التراجم مساحات مكانية واسعة، من أقصى الشرق إلى أقصى الغرب. …

Translation

Al-Wafi bi al-Wafiyat is the largest of Al-Safadi’s works, and the most comprehensive of books written in Islam regarding the biographies of men. Al-Safadi compiled it in thirty volumes, and it comes in second place in terms of size after his book: Al-Tazkira Al-Safadi or Al-Tazkira Al-Saliha, which is still in manuscript and is a major book on history, language, and literature. Al-Safadi referred to the notables of the era and the helpers of victory to the forty-sixth volume of it, and referred to it. The translations of the book were temporally extended, starting with pre-Islamic times and ending with some of those who lived in the eighth century AH, that is, those who were contemporary with Al-Safadi. The biographies also covered wide spatial areas, from the far east to the far west. …
