Hadith 1. حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، - وَكَانَ قَائِدَ أَبِيهِ بَعْدَ مَا ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا سَمِعَ النِّدَاءَ، يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ تَرَحَّمَ لأَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ ‏.‏ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِذَا سَمِعْتَ النِّدَاءَ، تَرَحَّمْتَ لأَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ لأَنَّهُ أَوَّلُ مَنْ جَمَّعَ بِنَا فِي هَزْمِ النَّبِيتِ مِنْ حَرَّةِ بَنِي بَيَاضَةَ فِي نَقِيعٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ نَقِيعُ الْخَضِمَاتِ ‏.‏ قُلْتُ كَمْ أَنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ قَالَ أَرْبَعُونَ ‏.‏. Narrated Ka'b ibn Malik: AbdurRahman ibn Ka'b ibn Malik said: When Ka'b ibn Malik heard the call to prayer on Friday, he prayed for As'ad ibn Zurarah. I asked him: What is the matter that when you hear the call to prayer, you pray for As'ad ibn Zurarah? He replied: This is because he held the Friday prayer for the first time for us at Hazm an-Nabit of Harrah belonging to Banu Bayadah in Naqi', called Naqi' al-Khadumat. I asked him: How many were you at that time ? He said: Forty (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1069.) Hadith 2. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، عَنْ إِيَاسِ بْنِ أَبِي رَمْلَةَ الشَّامِيِّ، قَالَ شَهِدْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَهُوَ يَسْأَلُ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ أَشَهِدْتَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عِيدَيْنِ اجْتَمَعَا فِي يَوْمٍ قَالَ نَعَمْ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَكَيْفَ صَنَعَ قَالَ صَلَّى الْعِيدَ ثُمَّ رَخَّصَ فِي الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ شَاءَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ فَلْيُصَلِّ ‏"‏ ‏.‏. Narrated Zayd ibn Arqam: Ilyas ibn AbuRamlah ash-Shami said: I witnessed Mu'awiyah ibn AbuSufyan asking Zayd ibn Arqam: Did you offer along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) the Friday and 'Id prayers synchronised on the same day? He said: Yes. He asked: How did he do? He replied: He offered the 'Id prayer, then granted concession to offer the Friday prayer, and said: If anyone wants to offer it, he may offer (Grade: shahih. Hadith 3. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَرِيفٍ الْبَجَلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَسْبَاطٌ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، قَالَ صَلَّى بِنَا ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فِي يَوْمِ جُمُعَةٍ أَوَّلَ النَّهَارِ ثُمَّ رُحْنَا إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ فَلَمْ يَخْرُجْ إِلَيْنَا فَصَلَّيْنَا وُحْدَانًا وَكَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ بِالطَّائِفِ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ ذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ أَصَابَ السُّنَّةَ ‏.‏. Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: Ata' ibn AbuRabah said: Ibn az-Zubayr led us in the 'Id prayer on Friday early in the morning. When we went to offer the Friday, he did not come out to us. So we prayed ourselves alone. At that time Ibn Abbas was present in at-Ta'if. When he came to us, we mentioned this (incident) to him. He said: He followed the sunnah (Grade: shahih. Hadith 4. حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ خَلَفٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ قَالَ عَطَاءٌ اجْتَمَعَ يَوْمُ جُمُعَةٍ وَيَوْمُ فِطْرٍ عَلَى عَهْدِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ فَقَالَ عِيدَانِ اجْتَمَعَا فِي يَوْمٍ وَاحِدٍ فَجَمَعَهُمَا جَمِيعًا فَصَلاَّهُمَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ بُكْرَةً لَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَيْهِمَا حَتَّى صَلَّى الْعَصْرَ ‏.‏. ‘Ata’ said:The Friday and the ‘id prayers synchronized during the time of Ibn al-Zubair. He said: Two festivals (‘id and Friday) synchronized on the same day. He combined them and offered two rak’ahs in the morning and did not add anything to them until he offered the afternoon prayer (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1072.) Hadith 5. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُصَفَّى، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ الْوَصَّابِيُّ، - الْمَعْنَى - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ الضَّبِّيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ رُفَيْعٍ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ قَالَ ‏ "‏ قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ فِي يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا عِيدَانِ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَجْزَأَهُ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَإِنَّا مُجَمِّعُونَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ عُمَرُ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ‏.‏. Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Two festivals ('Id and Friday) have synchronised on this day. If anyone does not want to offer the Friday prayer, the 'Id prayer is sufficient for him. But we shall offer the Friday prayer. This tradition has been narrated by 'Umar from Shu'bah (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1073.) Hadith 6. حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ مُخَوَّلِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ الْبَطِينِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِي صَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ تَنْزِيلَ السَّجْدَةِ وَ ‏{‏ هَلْ أَتَى عَلَى الإِنْسَانِ حِينٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ ‏}‏ ‏.‏. Ibn ‘Abbas said:the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite in the morning prayer on Friday Surah Tanzil al-Sajdah (xxxii.) and Surah al-Dahr(lxxi) (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1074.) Hadith 7. حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، رَأَى حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ - يَعْنِي تُبَاعُ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ - فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدَ مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مُشْرِكًا بِمَكَّةَ ‏.‏. ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar said:‘Umar b. al-Khattab saw a silken suit sold at the gate of the mosque. He said: Messenger of Allah, would that you purchase this suit and wear it on Friday and on the occasion when a delegation (from the outside) comes to you. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: One who has no share in the afterlife will put on this (suit). Afterwards suits of similar nature were brought to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He gave ‘Umar b. al-Khattab one of these suits. ‘Umar said: Messenger of Allah, you are giving it to me for use while you had told me such-and-such about the suit of ‘Utarid (I.e. sold by ‘Utarid). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I did not give it to you that you should wear it. Hence ‘Umar gave it to his brother who was a disbeliever at Mecca for wearing (Grade: shahih. Hadith 8. حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ، وَعَمْرٌو، أَنَّ يَحْيَى بْنَ سَعِيدٍ الأَنْصَارِيَّ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَبَّانَ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ مَا عَلَى أَحَدِكُمْ إِنْ وَجَدَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ أَوْ ‏"‏ مَا عَلَى أَحَدِكُمْ إِنْ وَجَدْتُمْ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ ثَوْبَيْنِ لِيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ سِوَى ثَوْبَىْ مَهْنَتِهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ عَمْرٌو وَأَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ حَبَّانَ عَنِ ابْنِ سَلاَمٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَرَوَاهُ وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلاَمٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.‏. Narrated Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: What is the harm if any of you has two garments, if he can provide them, for Friday (prayer) in addition to the two garments for his daily work? Amr reported from Ibn Habib from Musa ibn Sa'd from Ibn Habban from Ibn Salam who heard this (tradition) from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the pulpit. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been reported by Yusuf b. 'Abd Allah b. Salam from the Prophet (ﷺ) through a different chain of narrators (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1078.) Hadith 9. حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلاَنَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنِ الشِّرَاءِ وَالْبَيْعِ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَأَنْ تُنْشَدَ فِيهِ ضَالَّةٌ وَأَنْ يُنْشَدَ فِيهِ شِعْرٌ وَنَهَى عَنِ التَّحَلُّقِ قَبْلَ الصَّلاَةِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ ‏.‏. Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited buying and selling in the mosque, announcing aloud about a lost thing, the recitation of a poem in it, and prohibited sitting in a circle (in the mosque) on Friday before the prayer (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1079.) Hadith 10. حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدٍ الْقَارِيُّ الْقُرَشِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو حَازِمِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، أَنَّ رِجَالاً، أَتَوْا سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ وَقَدِ امْتَرَوْا فِي الْمِنْبَرِ مِمَّ عُودُهُ فَسَأَلُوهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لأَعْرِفُ مِمَّا هُوَ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ أَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ وُضِعَ وَأَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ جَلَسَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِلَى فُلاَنَةَ امْرَأَةٍ قَدْ سَمَّاهَا سَهْلٌ ‏"‏ أَنْ مُرِي غُلاَمَكِ النَّجَّارَ أَنْ يَعْمَلَ لِي أَعْوَادًا أَجْلِسُ عَلَيْهِنَّ إِذَا كَلَّمْتُ النَّاسَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَأَمَرَتْهُ فَعَمِلَهَا مِنْ طَرْفَاءِ الْغَابَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِهَا فَأَرْسَلَتْهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَوُضِعَتْ هَا هُنَا فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَكَبَّرَ عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ رَكَعَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ نَزَلَ الْقَهْقَرَى فَسَجَدَ فِي أَصْلِ الْمِنْبَرِ ثُمَّ عَادَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا صَنَعْتُ هَذَا لِتَأْتَمُّوا بِي وَلِتَعَلَّمُوا صَلاَتِي ‏"‏ ‏.‏. Abu Hazim b. Dinar said:People came to Sahl b. Sa'd al-Sa'idi, when they were doubtful about the kind of wood of the pulpit (in the mosque of the Prophet). They asked him about it. He said: By Allah, I know (the wood) of which it was made; I saw it the first day when it was placed there, and the first day when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sat on it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent for a woman whom Sahl named and asked her: Order your boy, the carpenter, to construct for me a wooden pulpit so that I sit on it when I deliver a speech to the people. So she ordered him and he made a pulpit of a wood called tarfa taken from al-Ghabah (a place at a distance of nine miles from Medina). He brought it to her. She sent it to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He ordered and that was placed here. I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) praying on it: he said: "Allah is most great"; he then bowed while he was on it; then he returned and prostrated in the root of the pulpit; he then returned (to the pulpit). When he finished (the prayer), he addressed himself to the people and said: O people, I did this so that you may follow me and know my prayer (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1080.) Hadith 11. حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي رَوَّادٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم لَمَّا بَدُنَ قَالَ لَهُ تَمِيمٌ الدَّارِيُّ أَلاَ أَتَّخِذُ لَكَ مِنْبَرًا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَجْمَعُ - أَوْ يَحْمِلُ - عِظَامَكَ قَالَ ‏ "‏ بَلَى ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَاتَّخَذَ لَهُ مِنْبَرًا مِرْقَاتَيْنِ ‏.‏. Ibn 'Umar said:When the Prophet (ﷺ) became fat, Tamim al-Dari said to him: Should I make for you pulpit, Messenger of Allah, that will bear the burden of your body ? He said: Yes. So he made a pulpit consisting of two steps (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1081.) Hadith 12. حَدَّثَنَا مَخْلَدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ، قَالَ كَانَ بَيْنَ مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَبَيْنَ الْحَائِطِ كَقَدْرِ مَمَرِّ الشَّاةِ ‏.‏. Salamah b. al-Akwa' said:The space between the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the wall (of the mosque) was such that a goat could pass (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1082.) Hadith 13. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، حَدَّثَنَا حَسَّانُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ الصَّلاَةَ نِصْفَ النَّهَارِ إِلاَّ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَقَالَ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ تُسْجَرُ إِلاَّ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ هُوَ مُرْسَلٌ مُجَاهِدٌ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ وَأَبُو الْخَلِيلِ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ‏.‏. Narrated AbuQatadah: The Prophet (ﷺ) disapproved of the offering of prayer at the meridian except on Friday. The Hell-fire is kindled except on Friday. Abu Dawud said: This is a mursal tradition (i.e. the successor is narrating it directly from the Prophet). Mujahid is older than Abu al-Khalil, and Abu al-Khalil did not hear (any tradition from) Abu Qatadah (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1083.) Hadith 14. حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، حَدَّثَنِي فُلَيْحُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ التَّيْمِيُّ، سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُصَلِّي الْجُمُعَةَ إِذَا مَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ ‏.‏. Anas b. Malik said:The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to offer the Friday prayer when the sun declined (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1084.) Hadith 15. حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، سَمِعْتُ إِيَاسَ بْنَ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ كُنَّا نُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْجُمُعَةَ ثُمَّ نَنْصَرِفُ وَلَيْسَ لِلْحِيطَانِ فَىْءٌ ‏.‏. Salamah b. al-Akwa' reported on the authority of his father:We used to offer the Friday prayer along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and return (to our homes) while no shade of the walls was seen (at that time) (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1085.) Hadith 16. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ كُنَّا نَقِيلُ وَنَتَغَدَّى بَعْدَ الْجُمُعَةِ ‏.‏. Sahl b. Sa'd said:We had a siesta or lunch after the Friday prayer (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1086.) Hadith 17. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْمُرَادِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي السَّائِبُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، أَنَّ الأَذَانَ، كَانَ أَوَّلُهُ حِينَ يَجْلِسُ الإِمَامُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فِي عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ - رضى الله عنهما - فَلَمَّا كَانَ خِلاَفَةُ عُثْمَانَ وَكَثُرَ النَّاسُ أَمَرَ عُثْمَانُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ بِالأَذَانِ الثَّالِثِ فَأُذِّنَ بِهِ عَلَى الزَّوْرَاءِ فَثَبَتَ الأَمْرُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ‏.‏. Al-Sa'ib b. Yazid said:During the time of the Prophet (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr and 'Umar the call to the Friday prayer was first made at the time when the imam was seated on the pulpit (for giving the sermon). When the time of 'Uthman came, and the people became abundant, 'Uthman ordered to make a third call to the Friday prayer. It was made on al-Zaura' (a house in Medina). The rule of action continued to the same effect (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1087.) Hadith 18. حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ الأَنْطَاكِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مَخْلَدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ لَمَّا اسْتَوَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَالَ ‏"‏ اجْلِسُوا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَسَمِعَ ذَلِكَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَجَلَسَ عَلَى بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَرَآهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ ‏"‏ تَعَالَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ هَذَا يُعْرَفُ مُرْسَلاً إِنَّمَا رَوَاهُ النَّاسُ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَمَخْلَدٌ هُوَ شَيْخٌ ‏.‏. Jabir said:When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) seated himself on the pulpit on a Friday he said, Sit down. Ibn Mas'ud heard that and sat down at the door of mosque, and when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw him, he said: Come here, 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud. Abu Dawud said: This tradition is known as mursal (the successor reports directly from the Prophet, omitting then name of the Companion). The people narrated it from the Prophet (ﷺ) on the authority of 'Ata'. Makhlad is his teacher (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1091.) Hadith 19. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الأَنْبَارِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَطَاءٍ - عَنِ الْعُمَرِيِّ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَخْطُبُ خُطْبَتَيْنِ كَانَ يَجْلِسُ إِذَا صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ - أُرَاهُ قَالَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ - ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيَخْطُبُ ثُمَّ يَجْلِسُ فَلاَ يَتَكَلَّمُ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيَخْطُبُ ‏.‏. Ibn 'Umar said:The Prophet (ﷺ) used to deliver two sermons. He would sit down when he ascended the pulpit till he (I think he meant the mu'adhdhin) finished. He would then stand up and preach, then sit down and say nothing, then stand up and preach (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1092.) Hadith 20. حَدَّثَنَا النُّفَيْلِيُّ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَخْطُبُ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ يَجْلِسُ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيَخْطُبُ قَائِمًا فَمَنْ حَدَّثَكَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَخْطُبُ جَالِسًا فَقَدْ كَذَبَ فَقَالَ فَقَدْ وَاللَّهِ صَلَّيْتُ مَعَهُ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ أَلْفَىْ صَلاَةٍ ‏.‏. Jabir b. Samurah said:The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to deliver the sermon standing, then he would sit down, then stand and preach standing. If anyone tells you he preached sitting, he is lying. I swear by Allah that I offered along with more than two thousand prayers (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1093.) Hadith 21. حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، قَالَ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَخْطُبُ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ يَقْعُدُ قَعْدَةً لاَ يَتَكَلَّمُ ‏.‏ وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ ‏.‏. Jabir b. Samurah said:I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) would deliver the sermon standing, then sit down without saying anything. The narrator then reported the tradition in full (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1095.) Hadith 22. حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شِهَابُ بْنُ خِرَاشٍ، حَدَّثَنِي شُعَيْبُ بْنُ رُزَيْقٍ الطَّائِفِيُّ، قَالَ جَلَسْتُ إِلَى رَجُلٍ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُقَالُ لَهُ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ حَزْنٍ الْكُلَفِيُّ فَأَنْشَأَ يُحَدِّثُنَا قَالَ وَفَدْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم سَابِعَ سَبْعَةٍ أَوْ تَاسِعَ تِسْعَةٍ فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ زُرْنَاكَ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ لَنَا بِخَيْرٍ فَأَمَرَ بِنَا أَوْ أَمَرَ لَنَا بِشَىْءٍ مِنَ التَّمْرِ وَالشَّأْنُ إِذْ ذَاكَ دُونٌ فَأَقَمْنَا بِهَا أَيَّامًا شَهِدْنَا فِيهَا الْجُمُعَةَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَامَ مُتَوَكِّئًا عَلَى عَصًا أَوْ قَوْسٍ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ كَلِمَاتٍ خَفِيفَاتٍ طَيِّبَاتٍ مُبَارَكَاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ لَنْ تُطِيقُوا أَوْ لَنْ تَفْعَلُوا كُلَّ مَا أُمِرْتُمْ بِهِ وَلَكِنْ سَدِّدُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا دَاوُدَ قَالَ ثَبَّتَنِي فِي شَىْءٍ مِنْهُ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا وَقَدْ كَانَ انْقَطَعَ مِنَ الْقِرْطَاسِ ‏.‏. Shu'ayb ibn Zurayq at-Ta'ifi said:I sat with a man who had been in the company of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He was called al-Hakam ibn Hazn al-Kulafi. He began to narrate a tradition to us saying: I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in a delegation consisting of seven or nine persons. We entered upon him and said: Messenger of Allah, we have visited you, so pray Allah what is good for us. He ordered to give us some dates. The Muslims in those days were weak. We stayed there for several days and offered the Friday prayer along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He stood leaning on a staff or a bow. He praised Allah and exalted Him in light, pure and blessed words. Then he said: O people, you have no power to obey or you cannot obey what you are ordered. But be straight and give good tidings. Abu 'Ali said: Did you hear Abu Dawud ? He said: Some of my companions reminded me of some words that were omitted from writing on the paper (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1096.) Hadith 23. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عِمْرَانُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ، عَنْ أَبِي عِيَاضٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا تَشَهَّدَ قَالَ ‏ "‏ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ نَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ وَنَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شُرُورِ أَنْفُسِنَا مَنْ يَهْدِهِ اللَّهُ فَلاَ مُضِلَّ لَهُ وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلاَ هَادِيَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَرْسَلَهُ بِالْحَقِّ بَشِيرًا وَنَذِيرًا بَيْنَ يَدَىِ السَّاعَةِ مَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ رَشَدَ وَمَنْ يَعْصِهِمَا فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَضُرُّ إِلاَّ نَفْسَهُ وَلاَ يَضُرُّ اللَّهَ شَيْئًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏. Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) addressed, he would say: Praise be to Allah, from Whom we seek help and pardon,and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls. He whom Allah guide has no one who can lead him astray, and he whom He leads astray has no one to guide him. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and apostle. He sent him before the coming of the last hour with truth giving good tidings and warning. He who obeys Allah and His Apostle follows the right path; and he who disobeys them shall harm none except himself, and he will not harm Allah in the least (Grade: shahih. Hadith 24. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ خُبَيْبٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَعْنٍ، عَنْ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ، قَالَتْ مَا حَفِظْتُ ق إِلاَّ مِنْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَخْطُبُ بِهَا كُلَّ جُمُعَةٍ قَالَتْ وَكَانَ تَنُّورُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَتَنُّورُنَا وَاحِدًا قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ بِنْتِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ وَقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أُمِّ هِشَامٍ بِنْتِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ ‏.‏. Bint al-Harith b. al-Nu'man said:I memorized Surah al-Qaf from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ); he would recite it in his speech on every friday. Our oven and his oven were same. Abu Dawud said: Rawh b. 'Ubadah reported on the authority of Shu'bah the name Bint Harithah b. al-Nu'man ; and Ibn Ishaq reported the name of Umm Hisham hint Harithah b. al-Nu'man (Grade: shahih. Hadith 25. حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي سِمَاكٌ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، قَالَ كَانَتْ صَلاَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَصْدًا وَخُطْبَتُهُ قَصْدًا يَقْرَأُ آيَاتٍ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ وَيُذَكِّرُ النَّاسَ ‏.‏. Jabir b. Samurah said:The prayer offered by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was moderate, and the sermon given by him was (also) moderate. He would recite a few verses from the Qur'an and exhort the people (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1101.) Hadith 26. حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلاَلٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ، عَنْ أُخْتِهَا، قَالَتْ مَا أَخَذْتُ ق إِلاَّ مِنْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَقْرَؤُهَا فِي كُلِّ جُمُعَةٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ كَذَا رَوَاهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ وَابْنُ أَبِي الرِّجَالِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَمْرَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ هِشَامٍ بِنْتِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ ‏.‏. Umrah reported on the authority of her sister:I memorized Surah al-Qaf from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ); he used to recite it on every friday. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated in a similar way by Yahya b. Ayyub, Ibn Abu Ar-Rijal, from Yahya b. Sa'id, from 'Umrah from Umm Hisham hint Harithah b. al-Nu'man (Grade: shahih. Hadith 27. حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ، عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ رَأَى عُمَارَةُ بْنُ رُؤَيْبَةَ بِشْرَ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ وَهُوَ يَدْعُو فِي يَوْمِ جُمُعَةٍ فَقَالَ عُمَارَةُ قَبَّحَ اللَّهُ هَاتَيْنِ الْيَدَيْنِ ‏.‏ قَالَ زَائِدَةُ قَالَ حُصَيْنٌ حَدَّثَنِي عُمَارَةُ قَالَ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ مَا يَزِيدُ عَلَى هَذِهِ يَعْنِي السَّبَّابَةَ الَّتِي تَلِي الإِبْهَامَ ‏.‏. Umarah b. Ruwaibah said that he saw Bishr b. Marwan (on the pulpit) praying on Friday (by raising his hands). 'Umarah said:May Allah reject these hands! I have seen the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the pulpit gesturing no more than this pointing with his forefinger (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1104.) Hadith 28. حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرٌ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُفَضَّلِ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ إِسْحَاقَ - عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذُبَابٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم شَاهِرًا يَدَيْهِ قَطُّ يَدْعُو عَلَى مِنْبَرِهِ وَلاَ عَلَى غَيْرِهِ وَلَكِنْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَقُولُ هَكَذَا وَأَشَارَ بِالسَّبَّابَةِ وَعَقَدَ الْوُسْطَى بِالإِبْهَامِ ‏.‏. Narrated Sahl ibn Sa'd: I never saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) raising his hands and praying on the pulpit or otherwise. But I saw him saying (doing) this way, and he would point with his forefinger making a circle by joining the middle finger with his thumb (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1105.) Hadith 29. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا الْعَلاَءُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَبِي رَاشِدٍ، عَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ يَاسِرٍ، قَالَ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِإِقْصَارِ الْخُطَبِ ‏.‏. Narrated Ammar ibn Yasir: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us to shorten the speeches (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1106.) Hadith 30. حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ، أَخْبَرَنِي شَيْبَانُ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ السُّوَائِيِّ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لاَ يُطِيلُ الْمَوْعِظَةَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِنَّمَا هُنَّ كَلِمَاتٌ يَسِيرَاتٌ ‏.‏. Narrated Jabir ibn Samurah as-Suwa'i: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would not lengthen the sermon on Friday. He would say a few words (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1107.) Hadith 31. حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، قَالَ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ أَبِي بِخَطِّ يَدِهِ وَلَمْ أَسْمَعْهُ مِنْهُ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ مَالِكٍ عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ احْضُرُوا الذِّكْرَ وَادْنُوا مِنَ الإِمَامِ فَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لاَ يَزَالُ يَتَبَاعَدُ حَتَّى يُؤَخَّرَ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَإِنْ دَخَلَهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏. Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Attend the sermon (on Friday) and sit near the imam, for a man keeps himself away until he will be left behind at the time of entering Paradise though he enters it (Grade: shahih. Hadith 32. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ، أَنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ حُبَابٍ، حَدَّثَهُمْ حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ وَاقِدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَأَقْبَلَ الْحَسَنُ وَالْحُسَيْنُ - رضى الله عنهما - عَلَيْهِمَا قَمِيصَانِ أَحْمَرَانِ يَعْثُرَانِ وَيَقُومَانِ فَنَزَلَ فَأَخَذَهُمَا فَصَعِدَ بِهِمَا الْمِنْبَرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏"‏ صَدَقَ اللَّهُ ‏{‏ إِنَّمَا أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَأَوْلاَدُكُمْ فِتْنَةٌ ‏}‏ رَأَيْتُ هَذَيْنِ فَلَمْ أَصْبِرْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ فِي الْخُطْبَةِ ‏.‏. Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) delivered a speech to us; meanwhile al-Hasan and al-Husayn came upon there stumbling, wearing red shirts. He came down from the pulpit, took them and ascended it with them. He then said: Allah truly said: "Your property and your children are only trial" (Ixiv.15). I saw both of them, and I could not wait. Afterwards he resumed the speech (Grade: shahih. Source: Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1109.) Hadith 33. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُقْرِئُ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي مَرْحُومٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ مُعَاذِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنِ الْحُبْوَةِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَالإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ ‏.‏. Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited to sit on hips by erecting feet, sticking them to the stomach and holding them with hands on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon (Grade: shahih. Ya'la b. Shaddad b. Aws said:I came to Mu'awiyah in Jerusalem. He led us in the Friday prayer. I saw that most of the people in the mosque were the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ). I saw them sitting in ihtiba condition, i.e. sitting on hips erecting the feet and sticking them to the stomach and holding them with hands or tying them with a cloth to the back, while the imam was giving sermon. Abu Dawud said: Ibn 'Umar used to sit in ihtiba position while the imam gave the Friday sermon. Anas b. Malik, Shuraih, Sa'sa'ah b. Sawhan, Sa'id b. al-Musayyib, Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, Makhul, Isma'il, Ismail b. Muhammad b. Sa'd, and Nu'aim b. Sulamah said: There is no harm in sitting in ihtiba position. Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Three types of people attend Friday prayer; One is present in a frivolous way and that is all he gets from it; another comes with a supplication, Allah may grant or refuse his request as He wishes; another is present silently and quietly with-out stepping over a Muslim or annoying anyone, and that is an atonement for his sins till the next Friday and three days more, the reason being that Allah, the Exalted, says: "He who does a good deed will have ten times as much" (vi) (Grade: shahih. Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When one of you becomes defiled during prayer, he should hold his nose and then turn away. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by Hammad b. Salamah and Abu Usamah from Hisham on the authority of his father from the Prophet (Saws).
