Has told us [Ahmad bin Isa] has told us [Abdullah bin Wahb] has told me ['Amru bin Al Harith] from [Bukair bin Al Asyajj] from [Kuraib] a former slave of Ibn Abbas, that Abdullah bin Abbas and Abdurrahman bin Azhar and Al Miswar bin Makhramah sent him to meet Aisyah, the wife of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam. They said, "Say our greetings to him and ask him about the two rak'ahs after the afternoon prayer, and say, 'Indeed we have received news that you performed these two rak'ahs, while it has come to us that the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam forbade both of them.' Ibn Abbas said, "Umar bin Al Khathab and I once beat people for doing that (praying after Asr)." Kuraib said, "Then I went to Aisha and told her what I had ordered. Then Aisyah said, "Ask Umm Salamah!" Then I went out to meet the people and told them about Aisyah's answer. And they also told me to meet Umm Salamah as they sent me to meet Aisyah. Then [Umm Salamah] said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbid both of them, then I saw him do both. As for when he was doing both, in fact he was already performing the afternoon prayer, then he came in to meet me while at my side there were several women from the Bani Haram from the Ansar, then he prayed the two rak'ahs. So I sent a female slave to him, and I said, "Stand beside him and say, 'Umm Salamah asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, have I not heard that you forbade me from performing these two rak'ahs? But why do I see doing both? Then when he gives a signal with his hand, then back away from him." Umm Salamah said, "Then the female slave did so, he then signaled with his hand, so that the female slave withdrew from him. When he finished, he said: "O son of Abu Umayyah, you asked about the two rak'ahs after Asr, actually some people from Bani Abdul Qais came to me with their people who had converted to Islam, so they kept me busy from doing the two rak'ahs after midday prayer. So those two rak'ahs are what I am doing now." Abu Muhammad was asked about this hadith, then he answered, "I agree with the hadith of Umar, from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam: "There is no prayer after the afternoon prayer until sunset, and there is no prayer after the morning prayer until the sun rises."
