Welcome to the study of authentic hadith selected by ULYAH. Let's look at some of the following sayings of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, one by one, with an open heart to put them into practice. 1st Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ أَخْبَرَنَا مَنْصُورٌ عَنْ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا أَوْصَى الرَّجُلُ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ وَهُوَ غَائِبٌ فَلْيَقْبَلْ وَصِيَّتَهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ حَاضِرًا فَهُوَ بِالْخِيَارِ إِنْ شَاءَ قَبِلَ وَإِنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَ. Has told us [Abu An Nu'man] has told us [Husyaim] has told us [Mansur] from [Al Hasan] that he once said, "If a man makes a will to someone who is not present, let him accept the will, if he is present then he can choose, if he wants he can accept and if he wants he can reject it." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 2nd hadith. حَدَّثَنَا صَالِحُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ الْحَسَنَ وَمُحَمَّدًا عَنْ الرَّجُلِ يُوصِي إِلَى الرَّجُلِ قَالَا نَخْتَارُ أَنْ يَقْبَلَ. Has told us [Salih bin Abdullah] has told us [Hammad bin Zaid] from [Ayyub] he said, "I asked [Al Hasan] and [Muhammad] about someone who made a will to another person, both of them said, "We think he should accept it." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 3rd Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَسْعَدَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنْ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ إِذَا أَوْصَى الرَّجُلُ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ وَهُوَ غَائِبٌ فَإِذَا قَدِمَ فَإِنْ شَاءَ قَبِلَ فَإِذَا قَبِلَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ أَنْ يَرُدَّ. Has told us [Muhammad bin Asad] has told us [Abu Bakr] from [Hisyam] from [Al Hasan] he said, "If a man makes a will to another person who is not there then when he comes, if he wants he can accept it, and if he has accepted then he can no longer refuse it." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 4th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا الْوَضَّاحُ بْنُ يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنْ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ إِذَا أَوْصَى الرَّجُلُ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ فَعُرِضَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْوَصِيَّةُ وَكَانَ غَائِبًا فَقَبِلَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ أَنْ يَرْجِعَ. Has told us [Al Wadldlah bin Yahya] has told us [Abu Bakr] from [Hisyam] from [Al Hasan] he said, "If someone makes a will to another person and the will is offered to him, when he is not there and he accepts, then it is not permissible for him to refuse." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 5th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْشَرٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ إِذَا أَوْصَى الرَّجُلُ لِإِنْسَانٍ وَهُوَ غَائِبٌ وَكَانَ مَيِّتًا وَهُوَ لَا يَدْرِي فَهِيَ رَاجِعَةٌ. It has been told to us by [Ja'far bin 'Aun] from [Sa'id] from [Abu Ma'syar] from [Ibrahim] that he said, "If someone makes a will to another person who is not there and it turns out he has died, while the person making the will does not know, then the will is not valid." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 6th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ عَنْ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ إِذَا أَوْصَى لِعَبْدِهِ ثُلُثَ مَالِهِ رُبُعَ مَالِهِ خُمُسَ مَالِهِ فَهُوَ مِنْ مَالِهِ دَخَلَتْهُ عَتَاقَةٌ. Has told us [Muhammad bin Isa] has told us [Yazid bin Zurai'] has told us [Yunus] from [Al Hasan] he said, "If someone bequeaths to his slave a third, a quarter or a fifth of his property, then that property is included in the slave's property. It was his liberation that included it." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 7th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى عَنْ إِسْمَعِيلَ عَنْ قَيْسٍ قَالَ كَانَ يُقَالُ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُحْرَمُ بَرَكَةَ مَالِهِ فِي حَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ تَزَوَّدَ بِفَجْرَةٍ. Having told us [Ya'la] from [Isma'il] from [Qais] he said, "It is said, 'Indeed, a man is deprived of the blessings of his wealth during his lifetime if at the time of his death he brings injustice to his heirs'." Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 8th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُبَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا حُصَيْنٌ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ الْمُرَّانِ الْإِمْسَاكُ فِي الْحَيَاةِ وَالتَّبْذِيرُ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد يُقَالُ مُرٌّ فِي الْحَيَاةِ وَمُرٌّ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ. Has told us [Ahmad bin Abdullah] has told us [Abu Zubaid] has told us [Hushain] from [Ibrahim At Taimi] from [His father] he said; [Abdullah] said, “There are two bitternesses; miserly when alive and extravagant when dead." Abu Muhammad said, "It is said to be bitter when alive and bitter when dead." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 9th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ إِذَا أَوْصَى الرَّجُلُ لِآخَرَ بِمِثْلِ نَصِيبِ ابْنِهِ فَلَا يَتِمُّ لَهُ مِثْلُ نَصِيبِهِ حَتَّى يَنْقُصَ مِنْهُ. It has been told to us by [Ubaidullah] from [Israil] from [Mansur] from [Ibrahim] that he said, "If someone gives a will to another person with an amount equal to his child's share, then the will is not given in the same way as his child's share until it is less than that." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 10th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ فِي رَجُلٍ كَانَ لَهُ ثَلَاثَةُ بَنِينَ فَأَوْصَى لِرَجُلٍ مِثْلَ نَصِيبِ أَحَدِهِمْ لَوْ كَانُوا أَرْبَعَةً قَالَ الشَّعْبِيُّ يُعْطَى الْخُمُسَ. "It has been told to us [Sulaiman bin Harb] has told us [Hammad bin Salamah] from [Dawud bin Abu Hind] from [Ash Sya'bi] about someone who had three sons and then he made a will for another person with an amount equal to the share of one of them if there were four sons." Ash Sya'bi said, "He was given one fifth." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 11th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ قَالَ سَأَلْنَا عَامِرًا عَنْ رَجُلٍ تَرَكَ ابْنَيْنِ وَأَوْصَى بِمِثْلِ نَصِيبِ أَحَدِهِمْ لَوْ كَانُوا ثَلَاثَةً قَالَ أَوْصَى بِالرُّبُعِ. Has told us [Muhammad bin Isa] has told us [Yazid bin Zurai'] has told us [Dawud bin Abu Hind] he said, "We asked [Amir] about someone who left two sons and left a will with an amount equal to the share of one of them if there were three sons." Amir then answered, "Let him make a will with a quarter." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 12th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ فِي رَجُلٍ أَوْصَى بِمِثْلِ نَصِيبِ بَعْضِ الْوَرَثَةِ قَالَ لَا يَجُوزُ وَإِنْ كَانَ أَقَلَّ مِنْ الثُّلُثِ قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد هُوَ حَسَنٌ. Has told us [Abu An Nu'man] has told us [Abu 'Awanah] from [Mughirah] from [Ibrahim], he said about a man who gave a will to another person in the amount of the heir's share, he said, "It cannot be less than one third." Abu Muhammad said, "This is good." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 13th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي السَّفَرِ عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ فِي رَجُلٍ أَوْصَى فِي غَلَّةِ عَبْدِهِ بِدِرْهَمٍ وَغَلَّتُهُ سِتَّةٌ قَالَ لَهُ سُدُسُهُ. It has been told to us [Qabishah] has informed us [Sufyan] from [Ibn Abu As Safar] from [Ash Sya'bi] about a man who made a will for his slaves worth one dirham, while there were six of his slaves, so each of them was one sixth." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 14th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سُفْيَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا أَقَرَّ لِوَارِثٍ وَلِغَيْرِ وَارِثٍ بِمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ أَرَى أَنْ أُبْطِلَهُمَا جَمِيعًا. Having told us [Qabishah] he said; I once heard [Sufyan] say, "If someone stipulates for an heir or for a non-heir one hundred dirhams, then in my opinion the will for both is void." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 15th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمٌ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ عَنْ شُرَيْحٍ قَالَ لَا يَجُوزُ إِقْرَارٌ لِوَارِثٍ قَالَ و قَالَ الْحَسَنُ أَحَقُّ مَا جَازَ عَلَيْهِ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ أَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ مِنْ أَيَّامِ الْآخِرَةِ وَآخِرَ يَوْمٍ مِنْ أَيَّامِ الدُّنْيَا. Has told us [Muslim] has told us [Hammam] has told us [Qatadah] from [Ibn Sirin] from [Syuraih] he said, "It is not permissible to establish a will for the heir." He said; [Al Hasan] said, "What he gets at the time of death is, the first day of the days of the hereafter, and the last day of the days of this world." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 16th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ قَالَ لَا يَجُوزُ لِوَارِثٍ وَصِيَّةٌ. Has told us [Amru bin 'Aun] has told us [Khalid] from [Khalid] from [Abu Qilabah] he said, "It is not permissible for the heir to accept the will." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 17th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا يُكْنَى أَبَا ثَابِتٍ أَقَرَّ لِامْرَأَتِهِ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ أَنَّ لَهَا عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعَ مِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ مِنْ صَدَاقِهَا فَأَجَازَهُ الْحَسَنُ. Has told us [Sulaiman bin Harb] has told us [Hammad bin Zaid] from [Humaid], that a man named Abu Thabit stipulated for his wife when he was about to die, that his wife would receive four hundred dirhams from her dowry. And [Al Hasan] permitted it." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 18th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ الدَّسْتَوَائِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ غَنْمٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَارِجَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ تَحْتَ نَاقَةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهِيَ تَقْصَعُ بِجِرَّتِهَا وَلُعَابُهَا يَنُوصُ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيَّ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَلَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَعْطَى كُلَّ ذِي حَقٍّ حَقَّهُ فَلَا يَجُوزُ وَصِيَّةٌ لِوَارِثٍ. Has told us [Muslim bin Ibrahim] has told us [Hisyam Ad Dastawa`i] has told us [Qatadah] from [Syahr bin Hausyab] from [Abdurrahman bin Ghanm] from [Amru bin Kharijah] he said, "I was once under the camel of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam which was chewing food until the saliva flowed between my two shoulders, I heard him say: "Know, Indeed, Allah has given everyone what is his right. So it is not permissible to make a will to the heirs." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 19th hadith. أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا هَمَّامٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ { إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَكُمْ الْمَوْتُ إِنْ تَرَكَ خَيْرًا الْوَصِيَّةُ لِلْوَالِدَيْنِ وَالْأَقْرَبِينَ } فَأَمَرَ أَنْ يُوصِيَ لِوَالِدَيْهِ وَأَقَارِبِهِ ثُمَّ نُسِخَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فِي سُورَةِ النِّسَاءِ فَجَعَلَ لِلْوَالِدَيْنِ نَصِيبًا مَعْلُومًا وَأَلْحَقَ لِكُلِّ ذِي مِيرَاثٍ نَصِيبَهُ مِنْهُ وَلَيْسَتْ لَهُمْ وَصِيَّةٌ فَصَارَتْ الْوَصِيَّةُ لِمَنْ لَا يَرِثُ مِنْ قَرِيبٍ وَغَيْرِهِ. Has reported to us [Yazid bin Harun] has informed us [Hammam] from [Qatadah] he said about His words: '(When one of you comes (signs of) death, if he leaves a lot of wealth, leave a will for his parents and close relatives)'. (Qs. Al Baqarah: 180), Allah ordered to make a will to both parents and close relatives. Then this law was abolished with a verse in the letter An Nisaa`. He determined that both parents had received a predetermined share, and gave inheritance to everyone who was entitled to inherit from their inheritance, and there was no longer a will for them. Wills are only given to people who have no right to inherit either from relatives or others." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 20th hadith. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ حَدَّثَنَا وَرْقَاءُ عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ كَانَ الْمَالُ لِلْوَلَدِ وَكَانَتْ الْوَصِيَّةُ لِلْوَالِدَيْنِ وَالْأَقْرَبِينَ فَنَسَخَ اللَّهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَا أَحَبَّ فَجَعَلَ لِلذَّكَرِ مِثْلَ حَظِّ الْأُنْثَيَيْنِ وَجَعَلَ لِلْأَبَوَيْنِ لِكُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا السُّدُسَ وَالثُّلُثَ وَجَعَلَ لِلْمَرْأَةِ الثُّمُنَ وَالرُّبُعَ وَلِلزَّوْجِ الشَّطْرَ وَالرُّبُعَ. Has told us [Muhammad bin Yusuf] has told us [Warqa`] from [Ibn Abu Najih] from ['Atha] from [Ibn Abbas] he said, "Property is for the children while the will is for the parents and relatives, then Allah removes from it what He wills. Allah made the share for men equal to the share of two women, the two parents each one sixth and one third, for the wife one eighth and one fourth, and for the husband half and one fourth." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 21st Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْمَعِيلَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو تُمَيْلَةَ عَنْ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ وَالْحَسَنِ { إِنْ تَرَكَ خَيْرًا الْوَصِيَّةُ لِلْوَالِدَيْنِ وَالْأَقْرَبِينَ } وَكَانَتْ الْوَصِيَّةُ كَذَلِكَ حَتَّى نَسَخَتْهَا آيَةُ الْمِيرَاثِ. Has told us [Ahmad bin Isma'il] has told us [Abu Tumailah] from [Al Husain bin Waqid] from [Yazid] from [Ikrimah] and [Al Hasan] about the verse: '(If he leaves a lot of wealth, leave a will for his parents and close relatives)' (Qs. Al Baqarah: 180), that was the previous will until it was abolished by the verse about inheritance." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 22nd Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ عَنْ الْحَسَنِ سُئِلَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ أَوْصَى وَلَهُ أَخٌ مُوسِرٌ أَيُوصِ لَهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنْ كَانَ رَبَّ عِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا ثُمَّ قَالَ وَإِنْ كَانَ رَبَّ مِائَةِ أَلْفٍ فَإِنَّ غِنَاهُ لَا يَمْنَعُهُ الْحَقَّ. Has told us [Sulaiman bin Harb] has told us [Hammad bin Salamah] from [Humaid] from [Al Hasan], he was asked about someone who makes a will and he has a rich brother, can he make a will to him?" He answered, 'Yes, even if he has twenty thousand." Then he said, "And even if he had a hundred thousand, because of his wealth it would not prevent him from obtaining rights." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 23rd Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ الْحَسَنِ وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ فِي رَجُلٍ قَالَ سَيْفِي لِفُلَانٍ فَإِنْ مَاتَ فُلَانٌ فَلِفُلَانٍ فَإِنْ مَاتَ فُلَانٌ فَمَرْجِعُهُ إِلَيَّ قَالَا هُوَ لِلْأَوَّلِ قَالَ وَقَالَ حُمَيْدُ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ يُمْضَى كَمَا قَالَ. Has told us ['Affan] has told us [Hammad bin Salamah] has told us [Qatadah] from [Al Hasan] and [Sa'id bin Al Musayyab] about someone who said, 'My sword is for Fulan, if he dies then for Fulan (the second person) and if he dies it will return to me.' They both answered, "The sword is for the first." [Humaid bin Abdurrahman] said, "Do what he says." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 24th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ أَنَّ عُرْوَةَ قَالَ فِي الرَّجُلِ يُعْطِي الرَّجُلَ الْعَطَاءَ فَيَقُولُ هُوَ لَكَ فَإِذَا مُتَّ فَلِفُلَانٍ فَإِذَا مَاتَ فُلَانٌ فَلِفُلَانٍ وَإِذَا مَاتَ فُلَانٌ فَمَرْجِعُهُ إِلَيَّ قَالَ يُمْضَى كَمَا قَالَ وَإِنْ كَانُوا مِائَةً. Has told us ['Affan] has told us [Hammad bin Salamah] has told us [Hisyam bin Urwah] he said about a man who gave another person a gift, he said, "That is for you, if you die then it is for so and so and if so and so dies then for so and so, if so and so dies then he returns to me." [Urwah] said, "Just as he says, even if there are a hundred of them." (Degree: authentic. Source: Sunan Ad-Darimi.) 25th Hadith. حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَةُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ الرَّاسِبِيُّ وَكَثِيرُ بْنُ مَعْدَانَ قَالَا سَأَلْنَا سَالِمَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ الرَّجُلِ يُوصِي فِي غَيْرِ قَرَابَتِهِ فَقَالَ سَالِمٌ هِيَ حَيْثُ جَعَلَهَا قَالَ فَقُلْنَا إِنَّ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ يُرَدُّ عَلَى الْأَقْرَبِينَ فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ وَقَالَ قَوْلًا شَدِيدًا. Has told us [Muslim bin Ibrahim] has told us [Hammad bin Zaid] has told us [Syaibah bin Hisham Ar Rasibi] and [Katsir bin Ma'dan] both said, "We asked [Salim bin Abdullah] about someone who made a will to other than his relatives.
