Episode 3: Realising Their Wrong, Glorifying Allah, and Regret

Among them was the most just and level-headed one, who from the start had urged them to glorify Allah and not forget Him. When the disaster struck, he spoke again to remind them. Allah said, "The most moderate of them said, โDid I not say to you, why do you not glorify (Allah)?โ" (Qur'an 68:28). They then realised their fault, glorified Allah, and admitted their own wrongdoing. Allah said, "They said, โGlory be to our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers.โ Then they approached one another, blaming each other. They said, โO woe to us; indeed we were transgressorsโ" (Qur'an 68:29-31). Yet their regret did not end in despair; they placed their hope in Allah's forgiveness and a better replacement. Allah said, "Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us one better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous (of His forgiveness)" (Qur'an 68:32). Allah closes this account with a mighty warning: "Such is the punishment (of this world). And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew" (Qur'an 68:33). Reflection: the door of repentance is always open for those who regret and return to Allah. A worldly affliction is a light rebuke compared to the punishment of the Hereafter; whoever comes to their senses, glorifies Allah, admits their wrongdoing, and hopes in their Lord may receive a better replacement. And the greatest lesson: never be stingy toward the rights of others, and always entrust every plan to the will of Allah. Source & Note: evidence from the Qur'an, 68:28-33.
