Episode 4: The Just Judge and the Test in the Prayer Chamber

Allah strengthened Dawud's kingdom and gave him the ability to decide matters rightly. Allah said, "And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and decisive speech (fasl al-khitab)" (Qur'an 38:20). "Fasl al-khitab" means firmness and clarity in weighing and deciding an affair โ€” the chief asset of a judge. The Qur'an then relates a test: two litigants climbed the wall of the prayer chamber where Dawud was worshipping. One said his brother had ninety-nine ewes while he had only one, yet the brother demanded that one too. Dawud quickly concluded that the claimant had wronged him (Qur'an 38:21-24). Afterward Dawud realized the event was a test from Allah for himself. He hastened to seek forgiveness and repent. Allah said, "โ€ฆAnd Dawud became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance. So We forgave him that; and indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return" (Qur'an 38:24-25). Reflection: a judge must hear both sides before ruling, and however high one's rank, he remains a servant who can be tested and needs to repent. Dawud's greatness shows precisely in how quickly he returned to Allah. Source & Note: evidence from the Qur'an โ€” 38:20-25. In honesty: some commentators attach a detailed Isra'iliyyat backstory to this test, but many scholars reject it as unbefitting a prophet's rank and absent from the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah. So we keep to the text of the ayat: a test, then Dawud's seeking forgiveness, prostration, and repentance โ€” without adding unverified detail.
