Episode 2: A Gentle Counsel to His Father

Relate the story of Ibrahim in the Book. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet (19:41). Recall when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear, does not see, and cannot benefit you at all?" (19:42). "O my father, indeed there has come to me knowledge that has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to a straight path. O my father, do not worship Satan, for Satan is disobedient to the Most Merciful" (19:43-44). Note how each appeal began with "O my father" โ full of affection and respect, even as he called to the most fundamental of matters. But his father refused harshly: "Do you reject my gods, O Ibrahim? If you do not stop, I will surely stone you, so leave me for a long while" (19:46). Ibrahim answered with grace, "Peace be upon you; I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me. And I will withdraw from you and from what you invoke besides Allah, and I will call upon my Lord; perhaps I will not be disappointed in calling upon my Lord" (19:47-48). Reflection: Ibrahim teaches the manner of calling the closest and most stubborn to the truth โ with gentleness, patience, and continued prayer for their good, never answering harshness with harshness.
