Episode 2: Idris Among the Patient and the Righteous

The Qur'an names Idris once more, this time alongside several other prophets, to affirm the quality that unites them. Allah said, "And (mention) Ishmael, Idris, and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient" (Qur'an 21:85). Patience is the thread that binds the prophets. Idris is named beside Ishmael and Dhul-Kifl as an example of patience โ€” patient in obeying Allah, patient in conveying the truth, and patient before the trials of life. Allah then mentioned the reward of that patience, "And We admitted them into Our mercy. Indeed, they were of the righteous" (21:86). Their patience led to Allah's mercy and a lasting righteousness. Reflection: these two ayat complete the portrait of Idris โ€” a man of truth, a prophet, raised to a high station, and among the patient and righteous servants. This is the whole of what the Qur'an teaches about him, and it is enough to make him an example: that truthfulness and patience are the path to Allah's mercy.
