Episode 1: The Fruit of a Prayer and the Barren Valley

Prophet Isma'il was the son of Prophet Ibrahim, born as the answer to the long prayer of a father who longed for righteous offspring. Allah recorded Ibrahim's prayer, "My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous" (Qur'an 37:100). So Allah answered, "So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy (Isma'il)" (37:101). By Allah's command, Ibrahim settled his wife and infant in a barren, uninhabited valley near the Sacred House (Makkah). There he raised a prayer full of reliance, "Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits, that they might be grateful" (14:37). The quality of being "forbearing" (halim) that Allah gave Isma'il from the news of his birth would later prove true in the greatest trial of his life. Reflection: every sincere prayer is never wasted with Allah. The birth of Isma'il in a barren valley teaches that Allah can bring forth life and blessing even in the most desolate place, so long as the heart leans wholly upon Him.
