Father and son alike submitted to Allah's command. Both stepped forward with resolute hearts toward the sacrifice. Allah said, "And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him, 'O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision.' Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good" (Qur'an 37:103-105). The command to sacrifice turned out to be a test of faith, not the final aim. Allah affirmed, "Indeed, this was the clear trial" (37:106). After the two passed it, Allah ransomed Isma'il with a great sacrifice. "And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice" (37:107). This event became the origin of the ritual of sacrifice (qurban) remembered each year by the Muslims โ€” an eternal reminder of the obedience of Ibrahim and Isma'il. Reflection: Allah does not desire the destruction of His servant, but the sincerity of his obedience. When a servant truly surrenders what he loves most for Allah's sake, Allah replaces it with something better. Sincere obedience never ends in loss.
