Isma'il, now grown, became his father's partner in a noble task: raising the foundations of the Sacred House, the first house of worship for humankind. Allah said, "And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security... And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, 'Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate'" (Qur'an 2:125). The two worked together while continually praying that their deed be accepted. Allah immortalized that moment, "And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], 'Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing'" (2:127). The Ka'bah they built is now the qiblah for all the Muslims of the world โ€” a heritage of faith that unites the hearts of millions in one direction of worship. Reflection: even the greatest deed is still accompanied by a prayer for its acceptance, for the acceptance of deeds is Allah's right alone. Ibrahim and Isma'il did not feel it enough to build the sacred House; they remained humble, asking that their labor be accepted before Him.
