Episode 2: Rejection and the Threat to Expel Lut

Rather than come to their senses, the people of Lut answered the warning with arrogance and threats. Allah said, "And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, 'Do you commit immorality while you are seeing? Do you indeed approach men with desire instead of women? Rather, you are a people behaving ignorantly'" (Qur'an 27:54-55). Their answer was not repentance, but a desire to expel those who kept themselves pure. "But the answer of his people was not except that they said, 'Expel the family of Lot from your city. Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure'" (27:56). The same is mentioned in Surah Al-A'raf, "But the answer of his people was only that they said, 'Evict them from your city! Indeed, they are men who keep themselves pure'" (7:82). Reflection: when the heart is corrupted, goodness itself is seen as a fault and purity as a disgrace. They wished to drive out the good people so they could be free in their evil โ€” a sign of how far astray they had gone.
