Episode 3: Flaunting Luxury and the Two Attitudes of People

One day Qarun came out before his people in all his splendor and adornment, showing off his wealth. That event drew out two different attitudes among people. Allah said, "So he came out before his people in his adornment. Those who desired the worldly life said, 'Oh, would that we had like what was given to Qarun. Indeed, he is one of great fortune'" (Qur'an 28:79). That is the attitude of those deceived by the glitter of this world; they measure fortune only by wealth. But those endowed with knowledge and faith gave a different measure: "But those who had been given knowledge said, 'Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for one who believes and does righteousness. And none are granted it except the patient'" (Qur'an 28:80). Those two sayings represent two ways of seeing that people hold in every age: one dazzled by the world, and one whose sight pierces through to the Hereafter. The people of knowledge know that true fortune is not in a pile of wealth, but in the reward of Allah attained by faith, righteous deeds, and patience. Reflection: luxury often deceives those weak in insight. True knowledge guards the heart from being dazzled by the world and directs one's aspiration to the everlasting wealth with Allah. The Qur'an does not detail the form of Qarun's "adornment" (zinah); what is firm is the contrast of the two human attitudes โ those who craved the world and those who prioritized the reward of the Hereafter.
