Episode 3: A Prayer within Layered Darkness

Inside the fish, in the depths of the sea, within layers upon layers of darkness, Yunus realized his fault and returned to Allah with the most sincere prayer. Allah immortalized his supplication: "…And he called out within the darknesses, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers'" (Qur'an 21:87). That prayer combined three things at once: affirming Allah's oneness (tawhid), declaring Him free of all deficiency (tasbih), and admitting one's own fault (repentance). No complaint, no demand — only the magnifying of Allah and the confession of one's own weakness. So Allah answered him at once: "So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers" (Qur'an 21:88). Notice the close of the verse: "and thus do We save the believers." Yunus's prayer was not for himself alone; it became a path of rescue for every believer who meets hardship with the same heart. Reflection: however dire a servant's state, the door of repentance is always open. The key to Yunus's rescue was not his strength, but his humility in admitting his fault and magnifying Allah at the lowest point of his life. Source & Note: evidence from the Qur'an — 21:87-88 (Yunus's du'a, "La ilaha illa Anta Subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin"). The excellence of this du'a is stated in an authentic hadith reported by al-Tirmidhi (no. 3505, graded sahih by a number of scholars): "The supplication of Dhun-Nun when he called out within the belly of the fish… no Muslim ever supplicates with it for anything but that Allah answers him."
