When the angel Gabriel came in the form of a man and asked Rasulullah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam about faith, he answered: "Iman is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the last day, and you believe in good and bad destiny." This authentic hadith narrated by Muslim is a formulation of the six pillars of faith that are known to every Muslim. Faith in Allah is the axis: belief in His existence, His oneness in creating and governing, His oneness as the only one who has the right to be worshipped, and the perfection of His names and attributes. From this point all the other pillars flow. Faith in angels means believing in beings of light who never disobey Allah's commands - among them Gabriel, the bearer of revelation, and the recorders of deeds who never neglect. The awareness that our every word is recorded is a direct fruit of this pillar. Faith in the books means believing that Allah sent down guidance to His messengers - the Torah, the Zabur, the Gospel - and that the Qur'an is the final book whose authenticity is maintained (QS Al-Hijr: 9). Faith in the apostles means believing in all of Allah's messengers without distinction, from Noah to Muhammad sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam as the final one. Faith in the last day instills awareness that this life is not the end of the story: there is resurrection, reckoning, and the fairest possible retribution. And faith in destiny teaches that everything goes according to God's knowledge and permission - giving birth to calm without turning off one's efforts. These six pillars are not just a list memorized by school children. It is a complete perspective on life: where we come from, who is watching over us, which guidance we follow, whose example we follow, where we are headed, and how to respond to what happens to us. Whoever lives it, his building will be strong in facing any storm.
