Sincerity: The Spirit of Every Charity

The first hadith that Imam Bukhari chose to open his sahih book, and that Imam Nawawi chose to open his Arba'in, was the words of Rasulullah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam: "Innamal-a'malu bin-niyyat" — indeed, deeds depend on his intention, and each person gets what he intended (HR Bukhari and Muslim). The scholars call this hadith one third of knowledge, because almost all human deeds stem from impulses. Sincerity means purifying one's goals: doing obedience solely for the sake of Allah, not for the sake of praise, recognition, or image. It does not require that the charity be hidden — what is required is a heart that does not depend on applause. Two people can do exactly the same charity with different values like heaven and earth, just because the contents of their hearts are different. The opposite is riya — doing good deeds for people to see — which the Prophet called minor shirk, the thing he most worried about befalling his people. In the age of social media, this test is even more subtle: sharing kindness can inspire, but it can also quietly shift intentions. The scholars gave a simple antidote — get used to having secret deeds, alms that no one knows about, night prayers that are never told; it's a pure savings between you and Allah. The good news is, sincerity multiplies the small things. Removing a thorn from the road, a smile to a brother, a bite of food for the family - all become acts of worship of great value when intended for the sake of Allah. On the other hand, a mountain of charity can be burned to nothing by corrupt intentions. Sincerity is a lifelong job, not a one-time achievement. Sufyan Ats-Tsauri said that he had nothing harder to fight than his own intentions, because he was always going back and forth. So start every morning by straightening your intentions, and close every act of charity with a prayer that it will be accepted. Allah does not judge our appearance and possessions — He judges our hearts and our deeds.
