Episode 2: The Vision of the Sacrifice and the Son's Obedience

When Isma'il grew to an age where he could strive alongside his father, the heaviest trial came. Allah said, "And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, 'O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think'" (Qur'an 37:102). The dream of a prophet is revelation, and Ibrahim understood it to be a command from Allah. What is astonishing is the son's reply โ not refusal, not fear, but perfect surrender. Isma'il answered, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast" (37:102). An answer that proved the quality of being "forbearing," which Allah had named from his birth, was no mere title but the reality of who he was โ a young man willing to give up his life in obedience to Allah. Reflection: true obedience is tested in the heaviest matter. Isma'il teaches that faith is not only on the tongue, but the readiness to surrender everything โ even life โ when Allah commands, with good expectation that behind His command there is surely good.
