Episode 5: The Thundering Shriek

After the three days passed, the decree of Allah came swiftly and completely. Allah said, "And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone, as if they had never prospered therein. Unquestionably, Thamud denied their Lord; then away with Thamud" (Qur'an 11:67-68). In Surah Al-A'raf, the punishment is described as a shaking earthquake, "So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone" (7:78). And in Surah Al-Qamar, "Indeed, We sent upon them one shout, and they became like the dry twig fragments of a pen" (54:31). The Qur'an affirms the punishment was just and complete for their sin, "So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]" (91:14). Reflection: the sturdiness of the stone homes they carved in the mountains could not protect them from a single blast of punishment. No fortress can withstand the decree of Allah for a people who defy Him.
