Sulaiman said, "O chiefs, which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?" (27:38). An ifrit of the jinn said, "I will bring it to you before you rise from your place; indeed I am strong and trustworthy for it" (27:39). But one who had knowledge of the Scripture said, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." So when Sulaiman saw the throne set before him, he said, "This is from the favor of my Lord, to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful" (27:40). He continued, "Whoever is grateful, his gratitude is only for [the good of] himself; and whoever is ungrateful โ then indeed my Lord is Free of need and Generous" (27:40). Reflection: however great the miracle, Sulaiman read it as a test โ never as a means of pride. He immediately asked himself: am I grateful, or ungrateful?
