Episode 3: A Clear Proof and the Intent to Reform

The people of Madyan accused Syu'aib of wanting to curb their freedom. So he answered with the clarity of a sincere guide. Allah preserved his reply: "He said, 'O my people, have you considered: if I am upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has provided me with a good provision from Him [should I fail to convey His message]? And I do not intend to differ from you in that which I forbid you; I only intend reform as much as I am able. And my success is not but through Allah. Upon Him I have relied, and to Him I return'" (Qur'an 11:88). He named two proofs of his sincerity: a clear evidence from his Lord (prophethood) and a lawful, wholesome provision. He did not forbid his people from fraud while secretly practising it himself; his words matched his deeds. That is what gave his counsel its weight. He also spoke one sentence that is the very spirit of every da'wah: "I only intend reform as much as I am able." He sought neither power nor wealth, only reform. And its outcome he entrusted to Allah โ "upon Him I have relied." Reflection: sincere counsel comes from one who guards himself first. A true caller forbids evil not for his own benefit but for reform; he strives to the limit of his ability, then leaves the result to Allah.
