Episode 5: The Call to the Companions of the Thicket

The Qur'an also records Syu'aib's da'wah to the "Companions of the Thicket" (Ashabul Aykah) — the people of a wooded region near Madyan. Allah said, "The companions of the thicket denied the messengers, when Syu'aib said to them, 'Will you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear Allah and obey me'" (Qur'an 26:176-179). To them his call was exactly the same: to be conscious of Allah, and to uphold justice in measure. Allah continued, "Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss. And weigh with an even balance. And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption. And fear He who created you and the former creation" (Qur'an 26:181-184). The repetition of the same call to two groups shows that the diseases of the human heart are often alike: denying Allah and wronging others in wealth. And the cure is one: God-consciousness and justice. Reflection: a prophet does not change his core message even before a different audience. Honesty in dealings is no trifling matter — it is named again and again as the visible fruit of taqwa.
