After every counsel was rejected and every threat hurled, the decree of Allah arrived. The wrongdoers were destroyed, while Syu'aib and the believers were saved. Allah said, "And when Our command came, We saved Syu'aib and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us. And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone, as if they had never prospered therein. Then, away with Madyan as Tsamud was taken away" (Qur'an 11:94-95). In Surah Al-A'raf the form of the punishment is named as a violent earthquake: "So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone" (Qur'an 7:91). And the Companions of the Thicket were struck by "the punishment of the day of the black cloud. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible Day" (Qur'an 26:189). Seeing his people destroyed, Syu'aib did not grieve over their disbelief after the truth had been made so plain to them. Allah described his stance: "So he turned away from them and said, 'O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the messages of my Lord and advised you, so how could I grieve for a disbelieving people?'" (Qur'an 7:93). Reflection: the punishment struck them in the very thing they were proudest of โ€” a prosperous town built on fraud. The believers, by contrast, were saved by Allah's mercy. A caller's duty is only to convey sincerely; guidance and the final verdict belong entirely to Allah.
