Episode 1: Yunus Leaves His People

Prophet Yunus (Jonah) was sent by Allah to the people of a town (known as Nineveh) to call them to tawhid. But his people turned away and persisted in disbelief. After calling them for a long time without response, Yunus left them in anger, before permission from Allah to depart. Allah said, "And indeed, Yunus was among the messengers. [Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship" (Qur'an 37:139-140). In Surah Al-Anbiya, Allah calls him "Dhun-Nun" (the man of the fish) and describes his departure: "And [mention] the man of the fish (Yunus), when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon himโฆ" (Qur'an 21:87). Yunus supposed he was free to leave without awaiting Allah's decree. His leaving was not disbelief, but the haste of a prophet worn out by his people's stubbornness โ and it was precisely from here that his great trial began. Reflection: a caller is required to patiently await Allah's decree, not to hasten in abandoning his task. Even a prophet was tested when he acted before his Lord's permission, so the nations after him would learn the value of patience. Source & Note: evidence from the Qur'an โ 37:139-140 and 21:87. The town's name "Nineveh" is not stated in the Qur'an; that comes from tafsir/tradition and is not treated as certain.
