Episode 2: The Lots on the Ship and the Great Fish

As the ship carrying Yunus sailed, it met a crisis such that the load had to be lightened, and lots were drawn to decide who should go overboard. Allah said, "โฆand he drew lots and was among the losers. Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy" (Qur'an 37:141-142). The lot fell to Yunus. He was cast into the sea, and a great fish (al-hut) swallowed him by Allah's command. The word "blameworthy" (mulim) in the verse shows that Yunus was then in a state to be regretted because of his departure before Allah's permission. In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah cites this event as a lesson for Prophet Muhammad to be patient: "So be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish (Yunus) when he called out while he was distressed" (Qur'an 68:48). Reflection: Allah's decree unfolds in unexpected ways. Yunus, who fled from hardship, was carried into a far heavier trial โ a reminder that there is no escape from Allah's decree except by returning to Him. The Qur'an mentions "al-hut" (the great fish) without detailing its kind; fuller details in some tafsir come from reports and are not certain. What is firm: Yunus lost the lot, was cast out, then swallowed by the great fish.
