Worrying about sustenance is the most universal human anxiety - and the Qur'an answers it repeatedly with a comforting affirmation: "There is not a single creature on earth but Allah bears its sustenance" (QS Hud: 6). This guarantee comes from the One who calls Himself Ar-Razzaq - The Giver of Sustenance - "Indeed, Allah, He is the Giver of sustenance who has strength and is very strong" (QS Adz-Dzariyat: 58). However, this guarantee has never been used as an excuse to stand idly by. Surah Al-Mulk verse 15 commands: "It is He who makes the earth easy for you, so walk in all its corners and eat from His sustenance." Walking โ moving, working, trading, planting. Even on Friday, as soon as the prayer is finished, the command is direct: "scatter yourselves on the earth and seek the grace of Allah" (QS Al-Jumu'ah: 10). In Maryam's story, Allah was able to give her food without cause, but she was still ordered to shake the base of the date palm tree (QS Maryam: 25) โ an eternal sign that sunnatullah wants a cause, even though the results are entirely in His hands. The Qur'an also opens doors of sustenance that are not visible in commercial logic. Istighfar: "Ask forgiveness from your Rabb, indeed He is Most Forgiving, surely He will send down heavy rain, increase your wealth and children" (QS Nuh: 10-12). Taqwa: "Whoever fears Allah, He will provide a way out for him and give him sustenance from unexpected directions" (QS Ath-Thalaq: 2-3). Gratitude increases blessings (QS Ibrahim: 7), and donations actually replace it: "Whatever you give, Allah will replace it" (QS Saba': 39). Lastly, the Qur'an straightens out the measurements. Expanded sustenance is not a sign of glory, and what is narrowed down is not a sign of humiliation (QS Al-Fajr: 15-16) โ both are tests. So the believer's formula is simple: maximum effort as if everything depends on your efforts, the heart relies fully as if everything depends on Allah - because both are true.
