Episode 2: The First Revelation in the Cave of Hira

As he neared the age of forty, Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ often withdrew to the Cave of Hira on Jabal an-Nur, reflecting and worshipping, away from the clamor and corruption of his people. One night in Ramadan, the angel Jibril came with the first revelation. He commanded, "Read!" The Prophet answered that he could not read, until Allah's first words descended: "Read in the name of your Lord who created โ Created man from a clinging clot. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous โ Who taught by the pen โ Taught man that which he knew not" (Qur'an 96:1-5). These are the first five verses of the Qur'an, raising "reading," "the pen," and "knowledge" as the opening of the message โ affirming that this religion is built upon knowledge and the recognition of the Creator. He returned trembling, then was calmed by his wife Khadijah, who assured him that Allah would never disgrace one of such noble character. Reflection: the first revelation was not a command to war or power, but a command to read in the name of Allah. Islam places knowledge grounded in tawhid as its foundation.
