كتاب "البلدان" لليعقوبي هو تأليف جغرافي تاريخي يتناول وصف أقطار العالم الإسلامي آنذاك، مبيناً نشأة البلدان والمدن وأسباب تسميتها وعادات أهلها. يعتمد اليعقوبي في محتواه على مشاهداته الشخصية وسؤاله أهل البلدان عن تاريخها، ويعلق على ما يسمع من روايات حول عادات وتقاليد أهلها، محاولاً التمييز بين ما هو منطقي وما هو محض خرافة. كما يذكر الكتاب فتح البلاد من الخلفاء والأمراء ومقدار خراجها، مما يجعله مصدرًا جغرافيًا مهمًا وأمينًا لعصره.
Translation
The book “Countries” by Al-Yaqoubi is a historical geographical work that describes the countries of the Islamic world at that time, explaining the emergence of countries and cities, the reasons for naming them, and the customs of their people. Al-Yaqoubi relies in his content on his personal observations and asking the people of the countries about their history, and comments on the stories he hears about the customs and traditions of their people, trying to distinguish between what is logical and what is pure myth. The book also mentions the conquest of the country by the caliphs and princes and the amount of its tax, which makes it an important and accurate geographical source for its era.
