Though the truth was plain before them, Ibrahim's people chose violence. They said, "Burn him and support your gods, if you are to act" (21:68). They kindled a great fire to burn an innocent man, only because he called to the oneness of Allah. But when Ibrahim was cast into the fire, Allah commanded, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim" (21:69). The fire whose heat consumes everything became, by Allah's command, at once cool and a means of safety. They intended harm for Ibrahim, but We made them the greatest losers (21:70). Their grand plan to destroy him instead turned into a clear proof of Allah's power and the truth of his call. Reflection: Allah's help comes at the very peak of the trial. When a servant truly surrenders and stands on His path, Allah can change the very nature of a thing โ even make a burning fire into a saving coolness.
